Your Essential Guide to Starting Yoga

Starting something new can feel both exciting and a little nerve-wracking, especially when it comes to yoga. If you’ve been curious about stepping onto the mat but feel unsure of where to start, I’m here to reassure you: yoga is for everyone. Whether you’re flexible or not, a seasoned fitness enthusiast or someone who’s never stretched in their life, yoga meets you exactly where you are.

In my classes, we focus on kindness, comfort, and moving at a pace that feels right for you. To help you begin your yoga journey with confidence, here are my top 5 tips for beginners.

1. Breathe First

Yoga isn’t about twisting yourself into a pretzel or achieving Instagram-worthy poses—it’s about connection, starting with your breath. The breath is the heart of every yoga practice, guiding your movements and helping you stay present. If you find yourself feeling unsure or overwhelmed, take a deep inhale and a long exhale. Everything flows from there.

Don’t worry about getting every pose perfect; just focus on breathing deeply and letting the rhythm of your breath guide you. You’ll find a sense of calm and ease in your practice.

2. Wear What Feels Good

Forget about expensive leggings or matching sets. The only rule for yoga attire is comfort. Choose clothes that let you move freely and don’t distract you during class. For some, that might mean stretchy pants and a tank top; for others, it’s a cosy tee and loose trousers.

Remember, yoga isn’t about how you look but about how you feel. Dress in a way that makes you feel at ease and ready to enjoy your practice.

3. Start Slow

It’s natural to want to dive in and try everything at once, but yoga is a practice of patience. Start with gentle poses and simple sequences, and don’t hesitate to take breaks when you need them. Listen to your body—it’s your best guide.

In my classes, I offer modifications for all poses so you can find the version that works for you. Yoga is a journey, not a destination, and every small step you take is something to celebrate.

4. Bring a Blanket

This might surprise you, but a simple blanket can be a game-changer in your yoga practice! Use it as extra support under your knees in poses like Cat-Cow, roll it up as a bolster for support, or drape it over yourself during relaxation at the end of class.

A blanket adds an extra layer of comfort and makes your practice more enjoyable, especially if you’re just starting out. It’s a small touch that can make a big difference.

5. Come as You Are

This is the most important tip of all: yoga welcomes you exactly as you are today. You don’t need to be fit, flexible, or familiar with any poses to start. The beauty of yoga lies in its adaptability to every body, every ability, and every stage of life.

In my classes, we celebrate showing up, no matter what that looks like for you. You’ll find a supportive, non-judgemental space where you can explore, learn, and grow at your own pace.

Final Thoughts

Starting yoga can feel like stepping into the unknown, but remember, you don’t have to do it alone. Whether you’re looking to stretch, de-stress, or simply try something new, yoga offers a world of benefits for your body, mind, and soul.

If you’re ready to take the first step, I’d love to welcome you to one of my classes. Together, we’ll move, breathe, and find moments of peace and joy. If you have any questions or hesitations, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m here to help you every step of the way.

Thank you!

I’ve got to say, this week was one of the toughest ones I’ve had in a long time. I’m existentially exhausted. Sometimes my body feels like it weighs 700kg from carrying all this grief.

But there were also moments of pure joy. Coming home to my beautiful dog after work or a class - he’s not used to being alone so is DELIGHTED by my arrival. My work colleagues being the kind, beautiful souls they are. And my classes and students. I’ve received hugs, and cards, and kind words and smiles. They all mean so much to me. Thank you.
